Do You Have a Sustainability Story to Tell?

As I find myself considering new vendors, asking questions about their story; listening to the why behind the product they created, where the product is made, etc., I am finding more and more brands that are checking the box of sustainability. And I am loving it!

According to an article from Shopify.com, “Nearly 50% of consumers globally are choosing to buy from brands with a clear commitment to sustainability.” “Sustainability gives you an opportunity to better connect with your customers…”. Who doesn’t want that?!

I don’t consider myself to be an extremist with this cause, but I can say that I do recognize the impact and reach I have personally on my little part of the world, and I want to act responsibly whenever I can! For me, that includes little things like picking up litter on the golf course, turning off lights when they aren’t being used (thank you mom for instilling that in me – I hear your voice coming out of me every time I say it to my kids now), being more mindful to cluster errand running, and let’s be honest, most of all, getting to wear an old favorite piece from my closet or jewelry box. Ironically, I typically get more compliments from something I have had forever than something I’ve recently purchased! My dad’s vintage Harley jackets are always a fave!

I have also noticed that many of the brands that do incorporate sustainability into their products through the materials they choose to use, actually offer a better fit, feel, and value! Sustainability tends to push the price tag a bit higher– however, balance that with the longer life of this particular piece, and that equals not having to re-purchase as often. And chances are you will end up wearing this piece more often, getting even more value, because of the better fit and feel!

Here are a few other ways to promote sustainability within your shop(s):

1. Go paperless
2. Shop for store décor at re-sale stores, e-bay, or markets
3. Upcycle or donate unsold stock
4. Use re-cycled bags or give guests an option to purchase a recycled re-useable tote

We don’t have to take on a big project to make a difference. We just have to start small and commit to doing a little more each day. It’s the little things that mean the most.
